Best Places to See 4th of July Fireworks in San Diego for America’s Big 250th Year Birthday Celebration
If you are after fireworks on Independence Day, you won’t be disappointed. You can look forward to some of the most amazing 4th of July fireworks in San Diego you have ever seen. Most of our fireworks take place over water, so you get to see a double effect of sparkles. Take a look below for the best places to watch the 4th of July Fireworks in San Diego.
Big Boom Bay San Diego
Location: San Diego Bay
Time: 9:15 PM – 9:30ish PM
Big Boom Bay San Diego is the largest fireworks display in San Diego on the 4th of July. 4 barges are setting off fireworks over the San Diego Bay and can be seen from almost all over Downtown San Diego, Coronado, Point Loma, Old Town, and beyond.
The best place to see the fireworks is, of course, from the water. If you know anyone with a boat, now is the time to cash in some friendship points and see if you can join them on their boat on the San Diego Bay. The second-best places to watch the Big Boom Bay fireworks are along the bay. The barges are located in front of Shelter Island, Harbor Island, and North and South Embarcadero.
The Big Boom Bay fireworks are raising money for the Fleetweek San Diego to support the Big Bay Boom. You can also watch the 4th of July fireworks on TV on Fox 5, starting at 9:15 PM.

Please note that parking in downtown and Seaport Village is extremely limited. I live right by there and see hundreds of cars stuck in traffic trying to find parking while the fireworks go off. I highly recommend using public transport (the trolley stop Seaport Village is just across the street) or coming a few hours early to reserve your spot.

More Fun Things to Do on 4th of July in San Diego
Fireworks and Parades are fun and will definitely put you in the mood for 4th of July, but there are more fun things to do on that day to celebrate the Birth of America.
- Beach Day: San Diego has some of the best beaches in the US and on 4th of July, they are the perfect place if you want to party and have a good time. This is NOT the time if you are looking for a quiet, read-your-book kind of relaxing beach day. It will be loud, fun, and a bit crazy. Get there early and try to use public transport or ride-shares as parking will be almost impossible. Check out some of our favorite San Diego beaches here
- Picnic in the Park: A day in the park is always a good idea. Pack up a yummy picnic, a blanket, and some drinks and find a shady spot on the grass to enjoy and relax.
- Bonfire on the Beach: If you are lucky, you might be able to score one of the bonfire spots in Mission Bay to have a little BBQ with the family and friends overlooking Mission Bay. You can also see the SeaWorld Fireworks from there, so this is a perfect place to hang out the whole day and evening.
- Pay Tribute: Visit some of San Diego’s Military Memorials and Monuments and pay your tribute to the heroes who supported this nation throughout the centuries.

Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4, 2026 — and it’s an extra-special one, marking America’s 250th birthday (the Semiquincentennial). With the holiday landing on a Saturday, expect a full weekend of celebrations across San Diego County.
Most fireworks shows across San Diego County begin around 9:00 PM. The big one — the Big Bay Boom over San Diego Bay — starts at 9:15 PM. A few run earlier, like Legoland in Carlsbad at 8:30 PM and La Jolla Shores’ drone show at 8:45 PM.
The best view of the Big Bay Boom is from the water, but you’ll find great free vantage points all along the bay — Embarcadero Marina Parks, Waterfront Park, Shelter Island Shoreline Park, Harbor Island, and the Coronado Ferry Landing. For a sit-down experience, bayfront restaurants and rooftop bars like Top of the Hyatt offer fireworks views (reservations required).

Absolutely. Free viewing spots include Embarcadero Marina Parks, Waterfront Park, the Convention Center area, Shelter Island Shoreline Park, Harbor Island Park, G Street Pier, Seaport Village, and Coronado’s Ferry Landing and Centennial Park. Arrive a few hours early to claim a good spot.
Popular parades include the Coronado 4th of July Parade (10 AM on Orange Avenue), the Scripps Ranch Parade, and the all-day Julian celebration with its famous pie-eating contest. The Oceanside Independence Day Parade runs earlier, on June 27. You’ll also find festivities at Old Town, the USS Midway, and Santee Salutes.
Parking near Downtown, Seaport Village, and the bayfront is extremely limited and fills up fast. Take the trolley (the Seaport Village stop is right across the street), use a rideshare, or arrive several hours early. Beach and bay areas get just as crowded, so plan your exit ahead of time too.
